O-Level Elementary Mathematics — Coordinate Geometry: Gradient & Midpoint: quick notes, common traps, and an exam-style example.

Coordinate geometry basics

Equation of straight line: y = mx + c. Gradient m = (y₂ – y₁)/(x₂ – x₁). Midpoint = ((x₁+x₂)/2, (y₁+y₂)/2).

Circle

(x – a)² + (y – b)² = r². Centre at (a, b), radius r.

Exam habits

  • Draw a sketch whenever possible.
  • Label axes clearly, especially for intercepts.
  • Check if answer requires exact form (fractions, surds).
