O-Level Pure Chemistry: Periodic Table Trends & Mastery
•By Intuitional Team
Master the atomic trends and chemical properties of Group I, Group VII, and Noble Gases. Essential notes for O-Level Pure Chemistry exams.
Overview of the Periodic Table
The Periodic Table is organized by increasing atomic number. In the Singapore O-Level syllabus (6092), students must master the trends across Period 3 and down the groups.
Group I: Alkali Metals
As you go down Group I:
- Reactivity increases: The outer electron is further from the nucleus, making it easier to lose.
- Melting point decreases: Metallic bonding becomes weaker.
Group VII: Halogens
In contrast to Group I, as you go down Group VII:
- Reactivity decreases: It is harder for the nucleus to attract an incoming electron.
- Melting/Boiling point increases: Diatomic molecules (F₂, Cl₂, Br₂) have stronger intermolecular forces.
